Cultural diversity

Importance

Australia is a diversified and multicultural country with residents identifying with over 280 ancestries. Multiculturalism is central to Australia's national identity and is one of the country's greatest strengths. On Census night 2021, 28% of Australian’s identified as being born overseas.

Data on cultural diversity is important in helping inform government planning and service providers. Cultural diversity covers topics such as ‘country of birth’, ‘language spoken at home’, ‘ancestry’ and even ‘religious affiliation’.
